La Mariposa - Sexto Grado

Sixth graders read the book La Mariposa by Francisco Jiménez. The book is about a boy from Mexico who is excited about going to school in the United States until he goes on the bus and realizes he doesn’t understand anything since all the kids speak English. Francisco doesn’t understand anything his teacher says, so he escapes by looking at a caterpiller in a jar next to his desk. He begins to draw butterflies and attempt to read about them. Francisco imagines himself as a butterfly flying over the fields of lettuce where his father works. At the end of the book, Francisco begins to learn some English words and feel more accepted by his friends.

The sixth grade made a short film to describe the book.
